Dry Eye

Dry eye condition can be an uncomfortable and irritating eye problem. Dry eye may be due to your eyes not making enough tears, or tears of poor quality, or tears that evaporate too quickly. Normal healthy tears keep the surface of the eye wet and lubricated, so problems with the tears can produce a variety of symptoms:

  • Dryness
  • Burning, stinging, itching
  • A gritty feeling
  • Irritation in smokey atmospheres or if it's windy
  • Blurred or smeary vision
  • Tired eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Excess watering
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Discomfort from contact lenses

There are a wide variety of factors that can cause Dry Eye:

  • Ageing
  • Blepharitis (See our separate page on this condition)
  • Dry environment and pollution
  • Contact lens wear
  • Computer use
  • Hormonal changes
  • Symptomatic of general health problems such as Arthritis
  • Laser eye surgery
  • Preservatives
  • Some medications

How is Dry Eye Treated?

You may be able to change some of the lifestyle factors above to help your Dry Eye symptoms. For instance - taking regular breaks from staring at your computer screen, wearing wrap around specs if it's windy outside, speaking to your GP about changing medications. Or you may need to artificially replace your tears to improve quality and quantity. Our Optometrists can discuss your lifestyle, assess your Dry Eye condition, and suggest treatments that may help you. We have a range of preservative free products which can relieve dry eye symptoms. Our dry eye assessment clinics can provide additional ongoing help, alongside our Ocular Hygienists.
