Blepharitis

Blepharitis refers to inflammation of the eyelids. Oils and other products normally secreted by the eye and eyelids build up on the edges of the lids and in amongst the eyelashes, which results in eye irritation, soreness and red eyelids. It's a common disorder that can easily be treated and managed.

Symptoms of Blepharitis:

  • Eye Irritation
  • Burning
  • Excess tears
  • Foreign body sensations
  • Crusty debris in the lashes or corner of the eyes
  • Dryness
  • Red eyelid margins

How is Blepharitis treated?

Developing a regular routine of strict eyelid hygiene is the essential first step in dealing with Blepharitis, as it has a tendency to re-occur and rarely disappears completely. It is important to clean your eyelids every day, and always remove make up before going to sleep. Even if you feel symptom free you should continue with eyelid hygiene, which prevents a build up of oils and crusted matter around the lids.

We recommend sterile eyelid wipes for the first two weeks of treatment, to physically remove deposits. You can then use the more economical lotion as an ongoing way to manage the condition. The products we recommend are preservative, paraben and perfume free, to reduce irritation even on sensitive skin. Your Optometrist will be happy to examine your eyes, and suggest specific solutions for you.

Friendly staff, well trained and thorough service.
